The Kawartha Youth Orchestra (KYO) is pleased to acknowledge the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation through a 2018 SEED Grant to fund a feasibility study for an After-School Music Program for Kids in Peterborough. The objective of the study is to assess feasibility to start and maintain a fully-funded, child centred after-school program that builds social and emotional strength and resiliency through music for lower income inner city children aged six to ten years old.
Music education in ensemble settings is a proven catalyst for the development of strong emotional and social skills including keeping children involved in learning, and improving their academic performance in the school setting by learning focus, discipline, respect, and cooperation.
All Saints’ is proud to have been able to work with KYO through the provision of facilities at the church and the teaching of the Choral Section of the program under the leadership of Syd Birrell, Anne Normande and Madeleine McGregor (a Choral Scholar).
The Pilot ran during April on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and a concert was held on the 30th. Many parents, grandparents and friends attended. It was lots of fun and the children were very excited to demonstrate all that they had learned during the month.
