All Saints' Hockey
The All Saints' Titans tyke (6 & 7 yr olds) hockey team went into the 2010-2011 season hoping to make an impact after doing well in our first year of mite hockey the season before. We also knew that most of the teams had several players that were in their second year of tyke, while our team was composed entirely of 6 yr old, first year tyke players.
We had a decent regular season, winning more than half of our games. More impressive was how much our All Saints tykes improved from the start of the season back in October. Quite simply, they learned how to play the game (and how to stand up).
We played in the Tyke Showdown at the Memorial Centre in February and won the Gold medal in our division. That was a sign of things to come!
Our round robin playoff the last two weeks of February was also a success, where we lost only one game. Our record qualified the All Saints' tykes to play for the gold medal final in our division.
The game took place on March 5, the Day of Champions for the PCCHL. With probably 150 parents and friends looking on, All Saints' jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Boston Pizza, our main rivals during the regular season. We would win one game, they would win the next. That’s how it played out throughout the year.
After All Saints' led 3-2 into the third period, Boston Pizza scored with less than a second left in the game to send it into overtime. By this time, there were probably 500 people watching these kids play, as we were delaying everyone else from starting their own games. 5 minutes of OT solved nothing and All Saints' was forced into a shootout to decide who was going to lift the trophy.
Cole Lester scored on our first shootout attempt and Daniel Walker scored on the third, leading All Saints to a 2-1 shootout win. Matthew Porter-Wilken was outstanding in the nets. Will Mancini, Curtis Golloher, Liam Post, Ryder Flynn, Carter Rutherford, Megan Rivet, Kaiden Collison & Jailea McDonald all played outstanding hockey in helping All Saints win the Gold medal.
Greg Post, Dan Rivet, Shawn Eckhardt, Jeff Mancini, Cory Lester, Kim McDonald and Colin Flynn all helped out on and off the ice to lead the team to the championship. Our success bodes well for next season, as we will be in our second year of tyke with the same players returning. Go All Saints'!
